Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism May 24, 2019
Mehta BY, et al. - Researchers studied adult onset Still's disease (AOSD) hospitalized patients in the US regarding the racial/ethnic variations, morbidity and mortality. They identified 5,820 AOSD patients [3817 (65.6%) female] who were hospitalized; mean age was 53.6 (SE–0.61) years. The patients comprised 56% white and 3% Asian. The hospital course was identified to be complicated by Macrophage Activating Syndrome (1.7%), Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC-1.1%) and Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (0.4%), respectively. During the study period, 154 inpatient deaths were reported (mortality 2.6%). Compared to whites, Asian origin patients exhibited significantly higher odds of in-hospital death. Patients whose hospital course was complicated by DIC had significantly higher mortality.
