Racial/ethnic disparities in renal cell carcinoma: Increased risk of early-onset and variation in histologic subtypes
Cancer Medicine Sep 19, 2019
Batai K, et al. - Researchers used the National Cancer Database (NCDB) and Arizona Cancer Registry (ACR) data to determine the differences in age at diagnosis and frequencies of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) histologic subtypes across racial/ethnic groups and Hispanic subgroups. This study included 405,073 and 9,751 RCC cases from NCDB and ACR, respectively. In both datasets, younger age at diagnosis was reported in patients from racial/ethnic minority groups vs non-Hispanic White (NHW) patients. American Indians and Alaska Natives (AIs/ANs) vs NHWs exhibited twofold increased odds of early-onset RCC in the NCDB. In the ACR, twofold increased odds of early-onset RCC were identified in Hispanic Americans. In NCDB, a greater prevalence of clear cell RCC (ccRCC) was seen in AIs (86.3%) and Mexican Americans (83.5%), compared with NHWs (72.5%). In the NCDB, twofold increased odds of diagnosis with ccRCC were seen in AIs/ANs, but the link was stronger in the ACR. Similarly, significantly increased odds of diagnosis with ccRCC were reported in Mexican Americans in the NCDB.
