Racial/ethnic disparities and barriers to diabetic retinopathy screening in youths
JAMA Ophthalmology May 31, 2021
Thomas CG, Channa R, Prichett L, et al. - In this cohort study involving 149 participants (76 male patients [51.0%]; mean [SD] age, 14.5 [2.3] years), researchers sought to evaluate disparities in diabetic eye examination completion rates and assess barriers in those not previously screened. The most commonly reported barriers were a lack of recall of being advised to get a diabetic eye examination, difficulty finding time for an additional appointment, and transportation issues. In this cohort study, non-White youths were less likely than White youths to have diabetic eye examinations, but they were more likely to have diabetic retinopathy. Identifying and removing barriers to diabetic retinopathy screening may improve access to diabetic eye examination and aid in early detection.
