Racial-ethnic differences in osteoarthritis pain and disability: A meta-analysis
The Journal of Pain Dec 14, 2018
Vaughn IA, et al. - In this meta-analysis, researchers assessed clinical pain severity in African Americans compared to Non-Hispanic Whites with osteoarthritis. Searching PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Library, they included English-language peer-reviewed articles comparing clinical pain severity in adult Black/African American and Non-Hispanic White/Caucasian patients with osteoarthritis. For studies using the Western Ontario and McMasters Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and non-WOMAC studies, Forest plots of standard mean difference exhibited higher pain severity in African-Americans. Higher self-reported disability and poorer performance testing were also evident for African-Americans.
