Racial disparities in the choice of definitive treatment for squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity
Head & Neck Jul 01, 2018
Lewis CM, et al. - Researchers assessed the disparities in selection of treatment for oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). They identified non-Hispanic white and non-Hispanic black patients with oral cavity SCC in the National Cancer Database (NCDB). Non-Hispanic white patients who received surgery were 82.3% vs 64.2% of non-Hispanic black patients. Findings suggested a lower likelihood of non-Hispanic black patients to receive or be recommended surgery for oral cavity SCC and a higher likelihood to refuse surgery, but no difference with non-Hispanic whites in terms of being contraindicated for surgery.
