Racial disparities in surgical outcomes of patients with inflammatory bowel disease

Montgomery SR, et al. - Considering that inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) has not historically been a focus of racial health disparities research, researchers performed an American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP 2011–2014) study of racial disparities in Inflammatory Bowel Disease(IBD). Black patients were noted to be at higher risk of post-operative death and serious morbidity (DSM) following surgery for IBD. Traditional risk factors like obesity, ASA class, emergent surgery, or stoma creation were not seemed to associate with the elevated rates of DSM.
