Racial disparities in receipt of standard chemoradiation in anal squamous cell carcinoma, an analysis of the National Cancer Database
Cancer Medicine Dec 16, 2020
Bian SX, et al. - Using the National Cancer Database, researchers assessed if there are racial disparities in the receipt of standard treatment as well as its link with survival. This analysis involved 19,835 patients diagnosed with anal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (Stages 2–3) between 2004 and 2015. They assessed racial disparities in the likelihood of receiving standard chemoradiation, using logistic regression. To assess links between race, receipt of standard therapy and survival, experts used Cox proportional hazards models. Better survival in anal SCC was reported in relation to standard treatment, but a less probability of undergoing standard treatment was noted in Black patients vs White patients. Although there was a higher mortality in Black patients vs White patients in the subgroup of patients undergoing nonstandard therapy, this disparity was ameliorated in the subset undergoing standard therapy.
