Racial disparities in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest interventions and survival in the Pragmatic Airway Resuscitation trial

Resuscitation Aug 14, 2020

Lupton JR, Schmicker RH, Aufderheide TP, et al. - Via performing a secondary analysis of adult out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients enrolled in Pragmatic Airway Resuscitation Trial (PART), researchers evaluated racial disparities in OHCA airway placement success and patient outcomes in the multicenter PART. In the parent trial, initial advanced airway management in patients was performed with laryngeal tube or endotracheal intubation. Among 3,002 patients, emergency medical services (EMS) identified 1,537 as white, 860 as black, 163 as Hispanic, 90 as other, and 352 as unknown. No significant adjusted differences were observed between airway success or survival outcomes in this one of the largest studies evaluating disparities in prehospital airway interventions and outcomes by EMS-assessed race for OHCA patients.
