Racial disparities in operative management of localized, non-functional pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors in surgically fit patients
HPB Jun 26, 2021
Bingmer KE, Hue JJ, Sugumar K, et al. - As per guidelines, non-functional neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas (NF-pNETs) that are ≥ 2cm in size should be resected. In this study, utilization of surgery was examined by race. In the NCDB (2004-2016), they identified a total of 3459 patients (White = 3,005; Black = 454) with localized NF-pNETs ≥ 2cm and Charlson-Deyo score 0-1. Observations revealed correlation of Black race with lower frequency of surgery. Patients exhibited prolonged survival in correlation with undergoing operative management. Based on findings, they emphasize targeting persistent racial disparities in management of a surgically curable disease for improvement.
