Racial disparities in complications and mortality after bariatric surgery: A systematic review
American Journal of Surgery Aug 03, 2021
Stone G, et al. - Via performing a systematic review of the literature, researchers sought to determine racial disparities in postoperative adverse events following bariatric surgery (BS). Included were 35 studies. Mostly Black and White patients were compared using standardized databases. The relationship between socioeconomic factors and racial differences in the rate of adverse events following bariatric surgery has not been reported in the current body of literature. Comparison of Hispanic and Caucasian patients did not yield any difference, and patients of other races and ethnicities are underrepresented. Findings suggest that relative to White patients, Black patients may experience higher rates of adverse events within 30 days following bariatric surgery.
