Racial and ethnic differences in the metabolic response of polycystic ovary syndrome
Clinical Endocrinology Apr 18, 2020
Ezeh U, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective cross‐sectional study to ascertain if markers of metabolic function vary in nondiabetic Asian‐American (AS), African American (AA), Hispanic White (HW), compared with Non‐Hispanic White (NHW) women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Participants in the study were 259 non‐diabetic women with PCOS (by NIH 1990 criteria) who completed a 2‐hour 75‐g oral glucose tolerance test to measure plasma glucose and insulin levels. According to findings, both HW and AA women with PCOS have elevated basal state IR and higher β‐cell response, as well as post‐challenge hyperinsulinemia relative to NHW and AS individuals. The trend among Asian women towards a lesser insulin response needs further study. Such results indicate that the race/ethnicity of patients should be addressed when screening and treating metabolic dysfunction in PCOS.
