Quantitative sonographic assessment of quadriceps muscle thickness for fall injury prediction in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis: An observational cohort study
BMC Nephrology May 28, 2021
Sai A, Tanaka K, Ohashi Y, et al. - The present study was performed to evaluate if quadriceps muscle thickness measured using ultrasonography can prognosticate fall injury among dialysis patients. Researchers conducted an observational cohort study including a total of 180 ambulatory hemodialysis patients between 2015 and 2016 from four dialysis clinics. They further estimated the sum of the maximum quadriceps muscle thickness on both sides and the average of the maximum thigh circumference and handgrip strength after hemodialysis. The results showed that using ultrasonography, quadriceps muscle thickness can be assessed easily at the bedside and is a precise predictor of fall injury in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis.
