Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis of anterior talofibular ligament in lateral chronic ankle instability ankles pre- and postoperatively

BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders Sep 18, 2017

Liu W, et al. - The clinicians applied 3.0 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the mechanical ankle instability group pre- and postoperatively in order to analyze and characterize the dimension and signal intensity of anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL). They discovered that chronic ankle instability (CAI) ankles had a higher ATFL length or width as well as higher signal intensity compared with stable ankles. The mean signal/noise ratio (SNR) value of the ATFL decreased after repair surgery, indicating the relaxed ATFL becomes tight postoperatively.
