Quantitative emphysema measurement on ultra-high-resolution CT scans
International Journal of COPD Oct 16, 2019
Xu Y, et al. - Researchers assessed the benefits of ultra-high-resolution computed tomography (U-HRCT) scans over conventional HRCT scans for quantitative measurement of emphysematous lesions. Participants were 32 smokers under routine clinical care who had chest CT done using a U-HRCT scanner. Overall participants were 32, of those, 13 had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Using 2 different protocols: U-HRCT mode with a 1024 × 1024 matrix and 0.25-mm slice thickness and conventional HRCT mode with a 512 × 512 matrix and 0.5-mm slice thickness, they re-built scan data. Quantitative evaluation of emphysema lesions was done on both types of scans, as the percentage of low attenuation volume (LAV%, <−950 Hounsfield units). For the U-HRCT and conventional HRCT modes, the mean values for LAV% determined were 8.9 ± 8.8% and 7.3 ± 8.4%, respectively. Overall, a greater detailed examination of emphysematous lesions was possible with U-HRCT scans vs conventional HRCT scans. Also, the former scans offered slightly increased correlation with airflow limitation.
