Quantitative computed tomography assessment for systemic sclerosis–related interstitial lung disease: Comparison of different methods

European Radiology Jul 09, 2020

Ufuk F, et al. - This study was undertaken to correlate the previously characterized six different histogram-based quantitative lung assessment (QLA) methods on high-resolution CT (HRCT) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc)–related interstitial lung disease (ILD). Researchers examined the HRCT images of SSc patients with ILD, and estimated the visual ILD score (semiquantitative) and the severity of ILD (limited or extensive). The previously defined six different methods and parameters (different lung attenuation ranges, skewness, kurtosis, mean lung attenuation, and standard deviation) were applied to assess the QLA score of ILD. They also conducted pulmonary function tests (PFTs) on all patients. This study enrolled a total of 55 individuals. It was shown that in SSc patients, all the QLA procedures are applicable in evaluating the ILD score and have potential importance to differentiate limited from extensive ILD.
