Quantitative associations between health insurance and stage of melanoma at diagnosis among nonelderly adults in the United States
Cancer Feb 05, 2020
Abudu B, et al. - Researchers undertook this cross-sectional analysis utilizing the National Cancer Data Base, to assess the link between health insurance status and stage of melanoma at the time of diagnosis among nonelderly adults, taking recognized risk factors for late-stage diagnosis into account. A total of 177,247 cases of invasive melanoma were identified. Across 4 insurance types (private, Medicaid, none, and unknown), the primary outcome ie, late-stage diagnosis, was compared. Findings revealed 3.12 and 2.21 times greater odds of being diagnosed with late-stage melanoma among participants with Medicaid or no health insurance, respectively, vs those with private insurance following adjustment for risk factors in late-stage diagnosis. To prioritize melanoma screening in groups with nonprivate insurance, a future inquiry into insurance differences in the diagnosis of late-stage melanoma may be beneficial.
