Quantitative analysis of punctate white matter lesions in neonates using quantitative susceptibility mapping and R2* relaxation

Zhang Y, et al. - Multiecho gradient recalled-echo MR imaging data of 24 neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy was recruited in the study by the researchers in order to differentiate punctate white matter lesions and focal hemorrhagic lesions using quantitative measures since it is hard to separate punctate white matter lesions from focal hemorrhagic lesions in neonates on conventional MR imaging as both types of lesions portrays increased signal intensity on T1-weighted images and, commonly, decreased signal intensity on T2-weighted images. R2* and magnetic susceptivity values were both observed to efficiently differentiate punctate white matter lesions, focal hemorrhagic lesions, and healthy white matter tissue from one another, with a large Hedge. in comparison with punctate white matter lesions and healthy white matter tissue, R2* and magnetic susceptibility values were markedly elevated in focal hemorrhagic lesions. Punctate white matter lesions were also discovered to have markedly increased values over healthy white matter tissue. Hence, in order to help clinicians distinguish and measure focal hemorrhages, punctate white matter lesions, and healthy white matter tissue R2* and quantitative susceptibility maps could be used.
