Quantifying the perioperative work associated with total hip and knee arthroplasty: The burden has increased with contemporary care pathways
Journal of Arthroplasty Jun 28, 2019
Wasterlain AS, et al. - Through prospectively timed preservice and immediate postservice activities performed outside of the operating room (OR) by 7 arthroplasty surgeons over a four-week period the researchers intended to record the specific service tasks and duration of time required for each task associated with the perioperative care of the primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patient. The average total preservice evaluation time was noted as 42.2 minutes. Further, from the patient entering the OR to incision, the average time was 40.8 ± 25.4 min. Thirty minutes was the time for immediate post-service tasks. Hence, for patients undergoing THA and TKA, these findings should be taken into account by the policymakers while reviewing the time and intensity spent on perioperative care.
