Quantification of steatosis in alcoholic and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: Evaluation of four MR techniques vs biopsy
European Journal of Radiology Aug 26, 2019
Boudinaud C, Abergel A, Joubert-Zakeyh J, et al. - Considering histological measurement by liver biopsy as the reference method, researchers evaluated liver steatosis quantification using 4 different MR techniques (3-echo MRI, 6-echo MRI, 11-echo MRI and MR Spectroscopy) so that one that is best correlated with the reference method could be identified. Prospective enrollment of 71 successive patients needing liver biopsy for acute or chronic liver disease was done, of these, 11 were excluded and 60 were reported. As per the findings, all four MR techniques displayed very good correlations with the histological standard, in hepatic steatosis evaluation. For each technique, no confounding factor was identified in a representative group of patients with associated liver conditions such as alcohol intake, fibrosis and iron overload. All 4 MR techniques may serve in daily practice.
