Quantification of epicardial adipose tissue by cardiac CT: Influence of acquisition parameters and contrast enhancement
European Journal of Radiology Nov 12, 2019
Marwan M, Koenig S, Schneider K, et al. - Two independent cohorts (100 and 127 persons) referred for routine coronary CT were involved in order to evaluate the impact of low-voltage acquisition and contrast enhancement on epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) quantification. For 100 kV data sets, an upper threshold of -40 HU exhibited the best association. For upper thresholds of -20 and -30 HU, important overestimation and for -50 HU, an important underestimation was discovered. In non-contrast vs contrast-enhanced acquisitions, a notable underestimation of EAT volume for contrast-enhanced scans was detected. Thus, in low-voltage and contrast-enhanced images, CT-based EAT volume quantification is feasible. Nevertheless, for the discovery of fat, the adjustment of the upper threshold is necessary.
