Quality of life outcomes from a randomized controlled trial of patient navigation in Latina breast cancer survivors
Cancer Medicine Sep 30, 2020
Ramirez AG, Muñoz E, Parma DL, et al. - In Latina breast cancer survivors (BCS), the impacts of an enhanced Patient Navigation program (Intervention; PN+) vs Control (PN) on general cancer and breast cancer‐specific quality of life (QoL) were compared. Researchers performed a 2‐year, two‐arm randomized controlled trial of the “Staying Healthy” program among Latina BCS. General cancer (Functional Assessments of Cancer Therapy [FACTS]‐G) and breast cancer‐specific (FACT‐B) QoL were included as primary outcomes. Significantly improved QoL measures were seen in PN+ participants vs PN at 6‐month follow‐up on all subscales except physical well‐being. All subscales showed significant effects, except for physical well‐being and social/family well‐being. There were no differences between groups at baseline. For improving Latina BCS QoL, the Staying Healthy program has the potential to serve as a national survivorship care model, especially as the national BCS population continues to increase.
