Quality of life as a prognostic indicator of survival: A pooled analysis of individual patient data from Canadian Cancer Trials Group clinical trials
Cancer Aug 21, 2018
Ediebah DE, et al. - Using pooled data from 17 randomized controlled trials opened by the Canadian Cancer Trials Group, researchers attempted to externally validate an established link between baseline health-related quality of life (HRQOL) scores and survival. They also evaluated the added prognostic value of HRQOL with respect to demographic and clinical indicators. They analyzed data from 3,606 patients with 8 different cancer sites. Stratified by cancer site, analyses were conducted with multivariate Cox proportional hazards models. They found baseline HRQOL scores on the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality-of-Life Questionnaire offered prognostic information over and above information from clinical measures. This finding serves as a confirmation to previous findings. However, the impact of specific domains may differ across studies
