Quality of life and patient satisfaction at 7-year follow-up of antibiotic therapy vs appendectomy for uncomplicated acute appendicitis: A secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial

JAMA Surgery Apr 19, 2020

Sippola S, Haijanen J, Viinikainen L, et al. - In order to determine the long-term quality of life (QOL) and patient satisfaction after antibiotic treatment or appendectomy for uncomplicated acute appendicitis, researchers conducted a secondary analysis of the Appendicitis Acuta multicenter randomized clinical trial. In this trial, comparison was performed of appendectomy with antibiotics in 530 patients (aged 18 to 60 years) with computed tomography–confirmed uncomplicated acute appendicitis who were randomized to undergo appendectomy (273 [52%]) or receive antibiotics (257 [49%]). At a median follow-up of 7 years, phone interview was performed of 423 available patients (80%). Per analysis, similar long-term QOL was inscribed for patients with uncomplicated acute appendicitis after appendectomy and antibiotics. However, patients who underwent an operation and took antibiotics reported lower satisfaction emphasizing exploration of predictive parameters for appendicitis recurrence.
