Quality of life and life satisfaction are severely impaired in patients with long-term invasive ventilation following ICU treatment and unsuccessful weaning
Annals of Intensive Care Apr 02, 2018
Huttmann SE, et al. - Researchers screened patients undergoing invasive home mechanical ventilation (HMV) with full technical supply and maximal patient care to determine health-related quality of life (HRQL), life satisfaction and patients’ perspectives on life and death associated with invasive HMV as the consequence of unsuccessful weaning. They noted that in many invasive HMV patients who had failed prolonged weaning, a severe impairment in both HRQL and life satisfaction was present although these patients received maximal care and a full supply of technical aids. Mobility, communication, social contact and care dependency were noted to be the most important areas of dissatisfaction. 32% of patients would have elected to die in hindsight rather than receive invasive HMV.
