Critical Care Mar 11, 2020
Huijben JA, Wiegers EJA, Ercole A, et al. - With 2006 adult patients in 54 ICUs between 2014 and 2018, who were enrolled in the CENTER-TBI (Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in Traumatic Brain Injury) study, researchers undertook this inquiry to confirm an earlier published consensus-based quality indicator set for the management of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) at ICUs in Europe, as well as to analyze its potential for quality measurement and improvement. Using the CENTER-TBI database, overall 26/42 indicators could be estimated. Most quality indicators confirmed feasible to obtain with more than 70% completeness. For most quality indicators, experts identified sub-optimal adherence, ranging from 26 to 93% and 20 to 99% for structure and process indicators. It was evident that for TBI patients in the ICU, the potential for quality improvement purposes was displayed by nine structures, five processes, but none of the outcome indicators.
