Quality improvement intervention to reduce thirty‐day hospital readmission rates among patients with systemic lupus erythematosus
Arthritis Care & Research Dec 23, 2021
Bowers E, Griffith M, Kolfenbach J, et al. - According to findings, it is feasible to implement a multidisciplinary postdischarge intervention to decrease readmission rates for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients in a large academic medical center.
In this retrospective study, a multidisciplinary postdischarge intervention to reduce 30-day readmission rates among SLE patients was proposed and assessed.
Under the intervention, a templated message was sent at the time of discharge to the rheumatology clinic nurses, which prompted the nurses to call the patient to coordinate future visits and provide education.
In the nonintervention and intervention groups, a total 59 and 73 hospitalizations were reported, respectively, during the 8-month study span.
The 30-day readmission rate was 29% and 19% in the nonintervention and intervention groups, respectively.
On the basis of the multivariate model, readmission rates difference between the 2 groups was not statistically significant.
