QOL and work capacity is unrelated to approach or complications after pituitary surgery
World Neurosurgery Sep 02, 2017
Uvelius E, et al. – Authors performed a comparison of transsphenoidal microscope–assisted surgery to endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery regarding preoperative and surgical factors for the final outcome of health related quality of life (HRQoL) and work capacity. They identified that surgical technique had no influence on HRQoL or work capacity in this long time follow–up although both are decreased compared to the general population. Thereby suggesting that fully endoscopic pituitary surgery, despite including larger tumors, bears the same risk for complications as microsurgery. Additionally, females seemed to be at a greater risk for decrease in HRQoL and work ability. They suggested considering these findings when informing patients and appreciating expectations of treatment.
