Pulse pressure and prognosis in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction
European Journal of Clinical Investigation Apr 01, 2019
Shah N, et al. - Since high pulse pressure (PP) is often correlated with adverse cardiovascular (CV) outcomes, but in patients with reduced ejection fraction (HFREF) this relationship could be reversed, researchers assessed the connection between PP and outcomes (mortality, CV mortality, stroke and HF hospitalizations [HFH]). For this investigation, they included WARCEF trial patients with left ventricular ejection fraction ≤35%. In this study involving 2,299 patients, the lowest tertile of PP (≤42 mm Hg) was linked to significantly higher CV mortality and HFH. A low PP (<40 mm Hg) predicts a worse prognosis in patients with advanced HFREF, while a high PP (>50 mm Hg) predicts a comparatively favorable prognosis.
