Pulmonary thromboembolism after carbon monoxide poisoning: A case series and review of the literature
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Jun 06, 2018
Lee Y, et al. - Via this retrospective data analysis, researchers sought to describe cases of pulmonary thromboembolisms (PTE) secondary to Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. They identified 5 patients with PTE after CO poisoning. Two patients experienced cardiac arrest which was successfully treated with tissue plasminogen activators and targeted temperature management. PTE was experienced by 3 patients. Anticoagulation treatment was provided to these patients. Findings do not clarify the causal relationship between PTE and CO poisoning. However, they recommend considering PTE in patients with CO poisoning as a differential diagnosis when unexplained hypoxemia or shock are observed.
