Psychosocial stress and bone loss among postmenopausal women: Results from the Women’s Health Initiative
Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health Jul 16, 2019
Follis SL, et al. - Using data from 11,020 postmenopausal US women, researchers determined if social stress was related to bone loss during a 6-year period in this patient population. Psychosocial stress was self-reported. At the femoral neck, lumbar spine and total hip, changes in bone mineral density were measured. In this study, greater bone loss was evident over 6 years of follow-up in relation to high social stress. The possible association between poor quality of social relationships and bone loss in postmenopausal women was suggested by the findings for social strain and social functioning, which aligns with previous findings in the literature.
