Psychiatric disorders and cardiovascular diseases during the diagnostic workup of potential breast cancer: A population-based cohort study in Skåne, Sweden
Breast Cancer Research Dec 18, 2019
Shen Q, Jöud A, Schelin MEC, et al. - Researchers conducted a large population-based study in Sweden to evaluate the risks of psychiatric disorders and cardiovascular diseases during the diagnostic workup of potential breast cancer. During 2005–2014 in Skåne, Sweden, all women with a new diagnosis of unspecified breast lump (N = 15,714), benign tumor or breast cancer in situ (N = 4,435), or breast cancer (N = 8,512) were considered exposed to breast diagnostic workup. Women had increased risks of psychiatric disorders and cardiovascular diseases during the diagnostic workup of potential breast cancer using a large population-based cohort with a follow-up of 10 years. Risk increases were higher when symptoms triggered the diagnostic workup compared with when screening was due to the diagnostic workup. To order to understand the underlying reasons for such threats, future research is needed.
