Psychiatric comorbidities in people with epilepsy
Neurology® Clinical Practice Jul 13, 2020
Mula M, Kanner AM, Jette N, et al. - Researchers assessed psychiatric disorders in epilepsy regarding the latest evidence in epidemiology, clinical implications, and management. Those with epilepsy have a 2- to 5-fold greater chance of having any psychiatric disorder and a psychiatric diagnosis was seen in 1 out of 3 people with epilepsy over the course of their lifetime. Since they are linked to poor treatment response (drugs and surgery, increased morbidity, and mortality, psychiatric comorbidities are not a good prognostic marker. For adult mood and anxiety disorders, as well as for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in epileptic children, there are validated screening methods available. Both at the onset and once a year, all epilepsy patients should be routinely screened for a psychiatric disorder. The risk and implications of mental health issues should be known by patients with epilepsy and their families.
