Psoriasis, cardiovascular risk factors and metabolic disorders: Gender-specific findings of a population-based study
Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Dec 11, 2019
Sondermann W, Deudjui DAD, Körber A, et al. - From the Heinz Nixdorf Recall study, researchers analyzed data from about 3,700 participants (aged 45-75 years) without coronary heart disease and missing data (psoriasis, diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome [MetS]) to determine the sex-specific prevalence of psoriasis and cardiovascular risk factors. They also estimated sex-specific connections between psoriasis and type 2 diabetes mellitus and MetS. They found that the psoriasis prevalence was 3.8%, with no differences between sexes, and observed a distinct link between psoriasis and diabetes mellitus. However, women with MetS demonstrated a higher likelihood of developing psoriasis compared with men. The authors concluded that their findings underscore the need for sex-specific research on the impact of psoriasis on metabolic disorders, as well as effective sex-tailored prevention measures.
