Psoas muscle mass can predict postsurgical outcomes in patients who undergo radical cystectomy and urinary diversion reconstruction
Urology Aug 29, 2021
Stangl-Kremser J, Ahmadi H, Derstine B, et al. - Sarcopenia not only predicted early complications post-radical cystectomy (RC) for bladder cancer but also demonstrated an informative trend for OS after RC, therefore, may inform models predicting postsurgical results.
A retrospective single-center study was performed.
Bladder cancer patients (n = 441) who had RC and urinary diversion between 2007 and 2012 were included.
Sarcopenia was present in 143 patients (32.4%).
Increased TPA (total psoas area) was linked with lower odds of 30-day complications post-RC (OR 0.95), in multivariable logistic regression analysis.
Similarly, TPA increase had prognostic value, although not statistically significant in the multivariable model once adjusting for other patient factors.
