Pruritus is common and undertreated in patients with primary biliary cholangitis in the United Kingdom
Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology Apr 05, 2019
Hegade VS, et al. - Via analyzing data from patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) recruited from all clinical centers in the United Kingdom (UK), researchers described the prevalence, severity, progression, and treatment of pruritus. In the UK-PBC cohort, they conducted a cross-sectional and longitudinal study of patients to evaluate pruritus trajectories. A high prevalence of pruritus and inadequate guideline-recommended therapy was found in a large national cohort study of patients with PBC. Data reported by patients used to determine the prevalence and treatment of pruritus are reliable. Findings suggested an association of younger age and levels of higher alkaline phosphatase with persistent pruritus [defined as an itch that occurs frequently or all the time]. In the UK, there is a need to increase awareness and management of pruritus in PBC.
