Proton pump inhibitors and risk for recurrent ischemic events or death in outpatients with symptomatic artery disease
Atherosclerosis Nov 21, 2019
Muñoz-Torrero JFS, Zamorano J, Rico-Martín S, et al. - Researchers determined the impact of the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) on the risk for subsequent ischemic events or mortality in a prospective registry (FRENA) of consecutive outpatients with symptomatic coronary, cerebrovascular or peripheral artery disease. For this study, a total of 5,170 patients were recruited. A median follow-up of 36 months was performed, during which a recurrent myocardial infarction occurred in 172 patients, ischemic stroke happened in 139, 71 had limb amputation and 267 died (cardiovascular death, 109). In this study, a lower risk for subsequent ischemic events but a higher risk for death was observed in relation to the use of PPIs among stable outpatients with symptomatic artery disease.
