Proton pump inhibitor use, hypomagnesemia and risk of cardiovascular diseases: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Jan 09, 2021
Rooney MR, Bell EJ, Alonso A, et al. - Researchers assessed if there exists a cross-sectional relationship between proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use and hypomagnesemia and if the prospective link between PPIs and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk is mediated by hypomagnesemia. Participants were 4,436 Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities participants without prevalent CVD at visit 5 (baseline, 2011-2013). To determine the PPI-CVD connection, multivariable Cox regression was applied. Findings of this elderly community-based study revealed that, compared to non-users, a higher prevalence of hypomagnesemia was seen among PPI users. Also, a higher CVD risk was noted in PPI users vs nonusers; however, it' s doubtful that links between PPIs with CVD risk are explained by hypomagnesemia.
