Proton pump inhibitor therapy reverses endoscopic features of fibrosis in eosinophilic esophagitis
Digestive and Liver Diseases Jun 14, 2021
Navarro P, Laserna-Mendieta EJ, Guagnozzi D, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for analyzing the impact of a short course of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) treatment in reducing endoscopic findings indicative of esophageal fibrosis in eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) patients. Patients who received PPI to induce EoE remission were assessed. Short-term treatment significantly decreased Endoscopic Reference Score (EREFS) scores in patients treated with PPI or swallowed topic corticosteroids, as well as rings and strictures. Deep histological remission (< 5 eosinophils/hpf) provided an additional reduction in total EREFS score in patients treated with PPI. In the short term, effective PPI therapy for EoE significantly reduced endoscopic esophageal fibrosis.
