Proteinuria and risk of stroke in patients with hypertension: The Kailuan cohort study
The Journal of Clinical Hypertension Apr 14, 2018
Wang A, et al. - This study assessed whether proteinuria changes across 2-year assessments were related to incident stroke in individuals with hypertension. Researchers analyzed data using Cox proportional-hazards models from 24,300 participants with hypertension in the Kailuan study who were stroke-free at baseline. After adjusting for other factors, stroke risk was significantly higher in those with incident and persistent proteinuria vs those with no proteinuria. This was consistent in ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage. No interaction was found between changes of proteinuria and diabetes mellitus among these patients. In conclusion, stroke risk in patients with hypertension is effected by changes in proteinuria exposure, particularly persistent proteinuria.
