Protein intake and risk of falls: A prospective analysis in older adults
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Feb 15, 2019
Sandoval-Insausti H, et al. - Researchers investigated if protein intake has any impact on falls in a Spanish community-dwelling cohort. This prospective cohort study included 2,464 men and women 60 years or older who were recruited in 2008-2010 and followed up through 2012. At least one fall was reported in 522 participants (21.2%). Observations suggest no protective benefit of protein intake on fall risk in these older adults. However, substantial benefits were seen related to high total protein intake after participants experienced an unintentional weight loss of 4.5 kg or more in the preceding year.
