Protein intake after the initiation of chemotherapy is an independent prognostic factor for overall survival in patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer: A prospective cohort study
Clinical Nutrition Jun 20, 2021
Hasegawa Y, Ijichi H, Saito K, et al. - This prospective cohort study was undertaken to determine the nutritional status and longitudinal dietary consumption during the course of chemotherapy, as well as their associations with the survival in patients having unresectable pancreatic cancer. Participants were 38 patients undergoing chemotherapy for unresectable pancreatic cancer between January 2018 and November 2019. Experts found moderate or severe malnutrition in 34.2% of the patients. The survivor group was found to have a significantly higher daily protein intake at one month after the initiation of chemotherapy when compared with the deceased group, while similar baseline nutritional intakes were observed between the two groups. In this study population with unresectable pancreatic cancer receiving chemotherapy, insufficient protein consumption was revealed as an independent poor prognostic factor. In advanced pancreatic cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, a beneficial treatment approach could be to improve the dietary protein intake.
