Protective psychosocial factors and dental caries in children and adolescents: A systematic review and meta-analysis
International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry Jun 25, 2018
da Silva AN, et al. - In this review, researchers explored the link between protective psychosocial factors and dental caries in children and adolescents by analyzing data from primary studies searched in the Medline, SCOPUS, LILACS, SciELO, and Web of Science databases. Protective psychosocial factor descriptors were in accordance with the salutogenic theory. They used the Newcastle–Ottawa scale to perform quality assessments. Some salutogenic factors were found to have importance in protecting dental caries during childhood and adolescence. In meta-analyses, the factors associated with dental caries in children included low parental internal locus of control, high parental external chance, and high maternal sense of coherence. Also, the association of high social support and greater self-efficacy with dental caries was observed in adolescents.
