Protection by vaccination of children against typhoid fever with a Vi-tetanus toxoid conjugate vaccine in urban Bangladesh: A cluster-randomised trial
The Lancet Aug 26, 2021
Qadri F, Khanam F, Liu X, et al. - Children vaccinated with Vi-TT between 9 months and less than 16 years, show protection against typhoid fever.
In this participant-masked and observer-masked cluster-randomized trial, 150 clusters, each with approximately 1,350 residents, were randomly assigned (1:1) to either Vi-TT or SA 14-14-2 Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine.
In JE vaccines and Vi-TT vaccines, typhoid fever (cases per 100,000 person-years) incidence of 635 and 96 was recorded, respectively (total Vi-TT protection 85%).
Different age groups, including children vaccinated at ages under 2 years, showed consistent total vaccine protection (81%).
The incidence was 213 and 93 among all residents in the JE clusters and in the Vi-TT clusters, respectively.
No significant indirect vaccine protection by Vi-TT was evident.
Participants showed good tolerability towards the vaccines, and did not experience any serious adverse events judged to be vaccine-related.
