Prosthetic choice in mitral valve replacement for severe chronic ischemic mitral regurgitation: Long-term follow-up
The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Feb 05, 2021
Bernard J, Kalavrouziotis D, Marzouk M, et al. - Short and long-term outcomes after mitral valve replacement (MVR) were assessed and compared among patients with biological (BP) or mechanical (MP) prostheses in the setting of severe ischemic mitral regurgitation (IMR). Among 424 patients undergoing MVR for severe IMR using BP in 188 (44%), and MP in 236 (56%), researchers used a 1:1 propensity score match (PSM) (n = 126 per group) and an inverse propensity treatment weighting (IPTW) to compare groups. Outcomes indicated no impact of the type of prosthesis on long-term survival among patients with severe IMR undergoing MVR. Mechanical prostheses may be linked with an increased risk of neurologic events and serious bleeding.
