Prostate weight and prostate cancer outcomes after radical prostatectomy: Results from the SEARCH cohort study
The Prostate Dec 19, 2021
Barlow SK, Oyekunle T, Janes JL, et al. - This study generated inconsistent results for prostate weight and short-term vs longer-term outcomes. Therefore, there is a requirement to better understand the complex biology leading to prostate size and the value of prostate size as a predictor of prostate cancer (PC) results.
A total of 6,242 men in the SEARCH cohort undergoing radical prostatectomy (RP) between 1988 and 2017 were analyzed to assess the association between prostate weight at RP and PC outcomes post-RP.
No association was found between prostate weight and PC-specific mortality (multivariable hazard ratio, HR = 1.43).
Prostate weight was found to be inversely linked with biochemical recurrence (multivariable HR = 0.70).
Increased HRs for prostate weight and castration-resistant PC and metastasis were obtained but statistical significance was not attained.
