Prostate-specific antigen within the reference range, subclinical coronary atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular mortality
Circulation Research May 21, 2019
Chang Y, et al. - In this cross-sectional study including 88,203 Korean men, researchers assessed coronary artery calcium (CAC) score and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in relation to total serum PSA (prostate-specific antigen) within the reference range. The participants had a cardiac tomography approximation of CAC score as part of a larger health checkup exam. For prevalent CAC, odds ratios with 95% CIs were calculated by using logistic regression model. In young and middle-aged Korean men, an inverse association of serum total PSA levels within the reference range, with subclinical atherosclerosis and CVD mortality was evident. This implies that PSA may have a role as a predictive marker for subclinical and clinical CVD.
