Prostate cancer survivors: Risk and mortality in second primary cancers
Cancer Medicine Oct 15, 2018
Chattopadhyay S, et al. - In prostate cancer (PC) patients, researchers used the Swedish Family-Cancer Database to evaluate etiological and clinical outcomes of second primary cancers (SPCs). Men who were diagnosed with a SPC were identified and their causes of death were recorded. Colorectal, skin, bladder, and lung cancers, melanoma, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma were identified as the most common SPCs. The death of patients with SPC was attributed to SPC in most of these cases, and nearly half of the patients died due to SPC. It is crucial to prevent and detect SPCs early in order to ensure improved survival in PC patients. In general, risk factors for SPC in PC were the same as those for first cancer.
