Prostate cancer–specific mortality across Gleason scores in black vs nonblack men
JAMA Dec 25, 2018
Mahal BA, et al. - The focus of this investigation was prostate cancer–specific mortality in black vs nonblack men with Gleason scores of 6 vs 7-10.
- This was a cohort study.
- SEER Prostate Active Surveillance/Watchful Waiting data was used.
- Prostate cancer outcomes can be best predicted, independently, by the Gleason score.
- No definitive treatment is necessarily required in Gleason 6 disease, and this is the main distinctive feature between Gleason 6 disease vs Gleason 7 to 10 disease.
- Nevertheless, there is less clarity with regard to the implications of Gleason score in black men, this is attributed to disparate prostate cancer outcomes, this has been specifically seen for Gleason 6 disease, in which risk assessment and management of disease in black men is controversial.
