Prospective validation of a clinical prediction score for survival in patients with spinal metastases: The new England spinal metastasis score
The Spine Journal Feb 29, 2020
Schoenfeld AJ, Ferrone ML, Schwab JH, et al. - A prospective longitudinal observational cohort study was carried out to evaluate the validity of a clinical prediction score for survival in individuals with spinal metastases. A total of 180 individuals were included between 2017-2018. The New England Spinal Metastasis Score (NESMS) was allocated based on data collected at the time of enrollment. Researchers visually measured survival with Kaplan-Meier curves and then analyzed using multivariable logistic regression, followed by Bayesian regression to evaluate for the robustness of point estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CI). This research confirms the NESMS and illustrates its efficacy in prognosticating survival for individuals with spinal metastatic disease, irrespective of the selected treatment strategy. This is the first research to prospectively confirm a prognostic benefit for individuals with spinal metastases. In addition, the NESMS can be directly used to patient care, hospital-based practice and healthcare policy.
