Prospective, randomized study of long-term hemodialysis catheter removal versus guidewire exchange to treat catheter-related bloodstream infection

Journal of Vascular Surgery Aug 26, 2017

Saleh HM, et al. – This study compared the clinical outcome of catheter–related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) treated with two different strategies: guidewire exchange (GE) vs catheter removal (CR) with new catheter insertion 3 to 7 days later. Outcomes did not suggest a difference in the clinical outcome of CRBSI treated with GE or CR with new catheter insertion 3 to 7 days later. However, guidewire catheter exchange saved veins for future access, reduced the cost and number of procedures, and avoided complications of new venipuncture.
